What is Schedule 3?

September 24, 2018 | by verity.ramus@hooknortonvets.co.uk | Pets

Schedule 3 comes under the Veterinary surgeons act of (1966). This piece of legislation allows Registered veterinary nurses (RVNS) to perform certain procedures under the direction of the surgeon. This includes the scaling and polishing of teeth, monitoring of general anaesthetic and performance of surgery that does not enter a body cavity. For example, the debridement and suturing of wounds.

RVN Jo monitors the patient under Anaesthetic whilst RVN Keeley begins scaling the teeth. The scaler must be moved constantly to avoid damage to the enamel. Large pieces of tartar may need to be removed using specific instruments prior to scaling. The Veterinary surgeon will assess the need for extractions which can only be performed by them. Once both sides have been scaled the teeth are ‘polished’. This is done with a separate head and a special paste which aims to buff the tooth surface to prevent future plaque formation. The mouth is then rinsed to reveal the end result.
