Support your livestock in their hardship by ensuring they have enough water, salt licks and trace elements. Not only do the salt licks help replace salts lost via sweating, but they also encourage livestock to drink plenty of water.
If you are worried about particular animals succumbing to the heat or would like to give your livestock a boost, electrolytes are available to be added to water/drenches.
You may well know, but most land in our area is deficient in some, if not all, trace elements (sometimes due to lock-up from other elements). Simply, trace elements affect everything from immunity to fertility and productivity of all forms, often underlying. Current weather conditions lend themselves to increasingly limited sources of trace elements.
Protect your flock or herd from losing productivity by discussing your options with your vet. There are easy ways of identifying deficiencies and several treatment options available.
At the very least, ensure they have easy access to good quality licks – and remember to raise them >1.2m off the ground or use an alternative source if you are a cattle farmer!
