Small Animal Pet Insurance

Pet insurance helps to cover the cost of unexpected veterinary care if your pet develops an illness or needs emergency care; this could be at your vet practice or a referral centre. Different types of pet insurance may also cover liability costs if your pet injures someone and indemnity if your pet dies or is lost. Thoroughly check what is covered before taking out a policy.

Claims costs for pet insurance have risen in recent years due to advancements in medicine, the complexity of cases and the increased number of treatments available to pets.

Whilst our Lifetime Care Club is NOT a pet insurance policy, it can help reduce the costs of preventative healthcare. Find out more here.

  • Will I need to pay an excess & will that increase if I make a claim?
  • What are the Claim Caps or Limits?
  • Is routine wellness care included?
  • What is excluded?
  • Does the vet fee limit relate to each condition or is there a maximum for all conditions?
  • Will your vet allow ‘direct claims’ from the insurer?

  • Find the insurance that best meets your needs; look at what your pet is covered for, not just the price alone.
  • Is the excess suitable?
  • As your pet ages, does your premium increase?
  • It’s important to understand your pet’s breed, the common issues it could have and what they could potentially cost.
  • Be aware pre-existing and current conditions which may not be covered if you decide to move policies.
  • Some insurers will only accept claims after a certain number of days from the policy’s start date.
  • The policy documents from insurers will tell you what your pet is and is not covered for. If in doubt, speak to your insurer.
