As the breeding season approaches, now is the ideal time to prepare your flock. One management tool that can help improve breeding efficiency is the use of teaser rams.
At Hook Norton Veterinary Group, we’re holding a dedicated Teaser Ram Surgery Day on Wednesday 26th August, offering discounted surgeries to help sheep farmers get ready for tupping.
A teaser ram is a male sheep that has undergone a surgical procedure to prevent him from successfully mating ewes while still retaining his natural libido. This allows him to seek out and identify ewes that are coming into season without resulting in pregnancies.
By introducing teaser rams to the flock before fertile tups are turned out, farmers can encourage more synchronised breeding and gain a better understanding of when ewes are cycling.
Using teaser rams before tupping offers several advantages:
For many flocks, these benefits can translate into a more organised breeding season and smoother lambing period.
Timing is important.
Following surgery, teaser rams should be allowed at least four weeks of recovery before being introduced to the ewe flock. Planning ahead ensures they have fully healed and are ready to perform their role before the breeding season begins.
If you’re intending to use teaser rams this autumn, now is the perfect time to arrange the procedure.
To help local sheep farmers prepare for the breeding season, Hook Norton Veterinary Group is running a dedicated Teaser Ram Surgery Day on Wednesday 26th August 2026.
On the day we’re offering:
Our experienced farm veterinary team will carry out the procedures in a dedicated surgery session, helping you prepare your flock efficiently and cost-effectively.
If you’d like to discuss whether teaser rams are suitable for your flock, or to book your ram onto our surgery day, please get in touch with our Farm Team on 01608 730085 or email farm@hooknortonvets.co.uk
Early booking is recommended as appointments are limited.
Preparing your breeding season starts long before the tup goes in. Teaser rams can be a valuable management tool for improving breeding efficiency, tightening your lambing period and making flock management easier throughout the season.
