Overgrown toenails are very common in alpacas, particularly in white animals, as they grow faster than their black and brown field mates. Soft ground that is ever present in the winter reduces the natural ability for animals to wear down their toenails themselves, so regular trimming is essential. Leaving toes overgrown results in a twisting effect and can put a large amount of strain on the lower leg. Nails should instead be trimmed to be level with the footpad (see image) while being careful to leave enough for good coverage of the toe and avoidance of hitting the nail quick.
Alpaca teeth are also very prone to overgrowing- the lower incisors constantly erupt, and their diet in the UK is much less rough and fibrous than on the plains of South America. If they aren’t wearing them down quickly enough, it is a good idea to get your vet to trim them back to avoid the lower incisors bending such that they will no longer be able to contact the dental pad.
