Canine Blood Donation. Could your dog help save a life?

September 10, 2020 | by Charlie Hands | Pets

Next Wednesday, the 16th of September, we are holding a Blood Donor Clinic at our Moreton-in-Marsh branch. We are always on the lookout for canine blood donors to help save the lives of other dogs in critical situations where we wouldn’t have time to get a unit of blood from the Pet Blood Bank.

Our fantastic nurses Tanya and Katy will be available in Moreton to blood type your dog, to see whether they may be an eligible donor. Your dog will receive a FREE health check by a vet and have their blood typed so that we can ensure they are suitable for future donations.

To be a blood donor, your dog needs to fit the following criteria:
>>Be between 1-8 years of age
>> Fit and healthy
>> Weigh more than 25 kgs in LEAN weight (important that they are not overweight)
>>Ideally, female dogs to be neutered, however, definitely not currently pregnant or previously had litters of puppies
>> Fully vaccinated and NEVER travelled abroad
>> Not receiving any medications and no previous history of receiving a transfusion themselves
MOST IMPORTANTLY: A calm and friendly temperament at the vets, with a fondness for lots of fuss and treats!

Why should my dog give blood?
Besides enormous satisfaction that your dog has helped save the life of another dog, you will receive a £50 credit to your account every time your dog donates in an emergency.

Please follow the link to the Blood Donor Registration form and either Tanya or Katy will call you to discuss the process and book you a blood typing appointment, that should last no longer than 30 minutes.

A dog may donate blood several times in their lives, up until the age of 8! You never know, your pet could be a hero and save another’s life. Thank you. HNVG x
