This viral cause of bleeding and ulceration originated in North America but has been found recently in Southern France and Italy. It is spread by midges, so it is expected to become a risk in the UK with rising temperatures.
It affects deer most severely, causing sudden death, but is also seen in cattle, where signs include difficulty swallowing, hypersalivation, rashes, bleeding around the coronary band and difficulty breathing and swallowing.
We’d like to raise awareness of the disease and ensure that our farmers are aware of the symptoms and know how to spot them in livestock and wild deer.
