Lambing 2024
It’s the most wonderful time of the year… lambing!
As lambing creeps closer (or has already begun for the early flocks) here’s a reminder of things to be done:
• Vaccinate! Ewes should be vaccinated with a Clostridial vaccination, such as Heptavac P, at least 4 weeks before their due date, this ensures ample time for the ewe to mount an immune response and provide antibodies in her colostrum
• House ewes approximately 2 weeks prior to due dates for indoor lambers
- Pens should allow 1.2m2 – 1.4m2 per ewe
- Each ewe should have 45cm of trough space for concentrates and 12 – 15cm for ad-lib forage
• Group according to scanning results, for targeted feeding
- Approximately 70% of foetal growth occurs in the last 6 weeks of gestation so it is vital to make sure we are feeding our ewes enough to avoid nutritional diseases such as twin lamb
• Ideally there should be at least one lambing pen per 8 ewes that is 1m x 2m, this should be cleaned and disinfected between each lambing and bedding replaced
