Schmallenberg

Schmallenberg

Schmallenberg rears its ugly head again. This nasty virus is spread by midges and is usually seen in 4 yearly cycles, like most midge borne diseases. Unfortunately, ewes will have been infected in summer, just as, or before, they were tupped and there is nothing we can do to stop the disease.

The virus stops neuromuscular junctions functioning when the lamb is in the womb and causes it to be born with fused joints. Lambs are often born at full term but fade shortly after birth. Those that do survive should be humanely euthanised as they have a poor prognosis and quality of life.

We will be holding a Schmallenberg Client meeting in May, for more information please click HERE
