Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy is pain-free, non-invasive and safe way to help benefit your pet’s health

How does it work?

Laser therapy uses near infra-red light to enhance and accelerate the body’s natural healing process.

The laser is placed in direct contact with the skin which enables light photons to penetrate the tissue and interact with molecules within the cells to cause several biochemical effects (photobiomodulation).

Laser therapy has the following effects:

  • Provides energy for the cells within the tissue allowing them to repair
  • Reduces the transmission of the pain signals from the tissue to the central nervous system
  • Increases the temperature of the tissue which has a soothing effect and increases vascular supply, therefore increasing the blood flow to the affected area

There are therefore MANY benefits of laser therapy:

  • Analgesic effect
  • Anti-inflammatory effect
  • Reduction of swelling
  • Accelerated tissue repair
  • Soothing muscle tension
  • Faster wound healing
  • Reduction of scar tissue
  • Improved nerve function
  • Improved vascular activity

What does it involve?

Every treatment is tailor-made by your vet. The nurses often carry out the laser therapy.

Each session lasts anywhere between 1 minute and 30 minutes, depending on the condition being treated. Treatment for arthritis tends to take the longest as we treat the painful joints as well as any associated muscle pain/spasms.

The number of sessions required depends on the condition. Some conditions will only require a few sessions.

For ongoing conditions such as arthritis, we would normally recommend an initial course of 6 treatments over the first 3 weeks, followed by long-term treatment every 1-4 weeks depending on the duration of benefit.

What else do you need to know?

The treatment is pain-free, non-invasive and safe. It is tolerated very well, in fact, most patients enjoy their sessions!

It is compatible with any other treatment your pet may need, including oral medication, hydrotherapy, acupuncture ad physiotherapy.

Your pet’s hair does not need to be clipped, they do not need to be sedated and you an remain with them at all times.

It is even covered by insurance (although we always recommend you check with your provider first.

Pain and inflammation associated with the following conditions can effectively be managed:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Back pain/disorders
  • Sprains/strains
  • Wounds
  • Skin disorders
  • Abscesses
  • Tail damage
  • Ear infections
  • Gingivitis
  • Anal gland infections
  • Post dental treatment
  • Post surgical swelling
  • Urethral blockage
  • And more!!

We are pleased to say that our laser gets used in different departments here at HNVG, therefore it may not always be available due to other departmental needs.
